Blacksburg, VA – Dry and breezy conditions are increasing the risk of wildfire spread across the region today.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a combination of low relative humidity and gusty winds is creating elevated fire danger conditions, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Forecasters say wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph are expected, particularly along ridgelines. The highest fire risk is anticipated between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., when winds strengthen and dry air persists.

Officials warn that these conditions can allow fires to start easily and spread quickly. Residents are urged to use extreme caution with any potential ignition sources and to check with local authorities for any burn bans or restrictions.

Winds are expected to decrease after sunset, which may help reduce fire risk later in the evening.

The conditions may impact outdoor workers and those in rural or wooded areas where fire spread could become rapid.
