Blacksburg, VA – A heightened fire danger alert is in effect today across parts of southwest and central Virginia, as well as northwest North Carolina, due to a combination of strong winds and low humidity. Officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution with outdoor activities that could ignite fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph, coupled with relative humidity levels between 12% and 23%, are creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. The fire danger is expected to peak this afternoon when winds will be strongest and humidity will be at its lowest.

Residents in affected areas, including Roanoke, Danville, Martinsville, and Wytheville, are advised to avoid outdoor burning and take precautions when handling potential ignition sources. Fire suppression equipment should be kept readily available, and individuals should check with local burn permitting authorities before any outdoor burning activities.

The increased fire risk will remain in place until 7 p.m. today, after which humidity levels are expected to rise, reducing the immediate threat. However, officials warn that dry fuels and breezy conditions could continue to pose risks in the coming days.
