Blacksburg, VA – A significant winter storm is bringing heavy snow and freezing rain to southwest Virginia, making travel conditions hazardous through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until 4 PM Wednesday, warning of ice accumulation and up to 8 inches of snow in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the storm will bring snow, sleet, and freezing rain overnight into Wednesday, with the heaviest snowfall west of I-64 and into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ice accumulation may lead to power outages and downed trees, while roads, especially I-81 and Route 460, could become nearly impassable.
By Wednesday morning, freezing rain will transition to steady rainfall, but slick roads and black ice will remain a threat through the evening. Temperatures will hover in the low 30s, with wind gusts up to 15 mph.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, and those who must drive should bring an emergency kit with flashlights, blankets, and food. The latest road conditions are available by calling 511.
Looking ahead, the storm will clear by Thursday, with partly cloudy skies and a high near 50°F, followed by dry weather through Friday.
