Fairfax County, VA – A fiery crash on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County claimed the life of a 20-year-old Manassas man Saturday evening.

According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred at approximately 5:51 p.m. on Saturday, August 2, on the westbound lanes of I-66 near the Fairfax County Parkway. A 1996 Nissan pickup truck had stopped in a travel lane due to mechanical problems when it was rear-ended by a 2016 Honda Pilot.

The impact forced the pickup off the roadway, where it struck bollards separating the main lanes from the Express Lanes, then crossed into the Express Lanes before coming to rest on the left shoulder. The vehicle caught fire shortly after.

The driver of the pickup, Will R. Hernandez-Villalta of Manassas, died at the scene. The Honda Pilot, which spun out and came to rest in the main travel lanes, was being driven by 38-year-old Danielle M. McKinnon of Chantilly. McKinnon and a juvenile passenger reportedly suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending. The Virginia State Police are requesting anyone who witnessed the incident or may have video footage to contact Trooper A. King at questions@vsp.virginia.gov or call 703-687-2631.

Traffic on I-66 was impacted for several hours as emergency crews responded to the scene and investigators worked to determine the sequence of events. No other vehicles were involved.
