Virginia Beach, Virginia – Boaters across the Chesapeake Bay and nearby tidal rivers could face rapidly developing severe storms Monday afternoon as a Tornado Watch remains in effect until 7 p.m., raising the risk of waterspouts and damaging wind over the water.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 67 includes large sections of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding waterways stretching from Maryland to coastal Virginia. The watch covers the bay from Pooles Island, Maryland, south to Cape Henry near Virginia Beach, along with major waterways including the tidal Potomac River, York River, Rappahannock River, and sections of the James River.

Thunderstorms moving through the region may produce sudden wind gusts exceeding 50 knots, lightning, and brief waterspouts capable of creating dangerous conditions for vessels. Mariners near busy shipping channels such as Baltimore Harbor, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, and Hampton Roads should be prepared for rapidly shifting winds and sharply reduced visibility in heavy rain.

Areas including Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, and Virginia Beach sit near the southern end of the watch area where storms could intensify as they approach the Atlantic coastline. Smaller craft operating in Currituck Sound, Tangier Sound, and the lower Chesapeake Bay may experience rough waters as storms pass.

Boaters are urged to monitor NOAA Weather Radio and consider returning to port ahead of approaching storms. The tornado watch remains in effect through 7 p.m. Monday, and marine warnings could be issued quickly if rotating storms or waterspouts develop over the bay.
