Chincoteague, Va. – Boat operators along Virginia’s Eastern Shore are being urged to seek safe harbor as waterspouts form off the coast Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service in Wakefield issued a Special Marine Warning for waters from Fenwick Island, Delaware, to Cape Charles Light, Virginia, lasting until 3 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, marine spotters observed multiple cumulus clouds producing waterspouts shortly after 1 p.m. near Assawoman Bay, Assateague Beach, and the African Queen Wreck. The storms were nearly stationary, creating favorable conditions for additional waterspout development.

Hazardous seas are expected near Chincoteague Bay, Wachapreague Inlet, and offshore fishing grounds including Jackspot Reef and Gulf Rambler Wreck. Locations from Ocean City Inlet south to Parramore Island remain under the advisory. The NWS warned that waterspouts can capsize small boats and pose sudden risks to larger vessels operating in the affected zone.

Mariners are advised to remain in port until the warning expires and to monitor NOAA Weather Radio for updates. The weather service noted that additional advisories may be issued if storms persist into the evening.
