Richmond, VA – Communities along Virginia and Maryland’s tidal rivers are bracing for coastal flooding impacts today, with the Potomac River facing the greatest threat.
According to the National Weather Service Wakefield, VA, persistent northeast winds will continue through Friday before diminishing tonight. These winds are fueling tidal flooding during morning high tide, with moderate flooding possible along the Potomac River.
Forecasters say additional minor coastal flooding is expected along the tidal James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers in Virginia. Maryland’s tidal Choptank, Nanticoke, and Wicomico Rivers are also at risk of minor flooding throughout the day.
The National Weather Service warns that vulnerable locations may see road closures, yard flooding, and inundation of low-lying areas. Communities near the Potomac could see water levels rise enough to block access roads during peak tide.
Flooding impacts are forecast to lessen tonight as winds ease, but officials caution residents to remain alert to changing water levels. Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roadways, and residents in flood-prone areas should take precautions for potential water intrusion.
