Blacksburg, VA — A significant weather system is set to hit Southwest Virginia tonight, bringing gusty northwest winds and possible snowfall. Residents should prepare for wind gusts up to 50 mph and rapidly dropping temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a wind advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 4 p.m. Thursday. The advisory includes portions of the I-81 corridor, covering counties from Greenbrier, WV, to Watauga, NC. Wind chills could drop to the teens by Friday morning, making outdoor activities hazardous.

Snowfall amounts are expected to be light, ranging from 1 to 2 inches in most areas, with 3 to 5 inches possible in higher elevations of Greenbrier County. Wind gusts may damage unsecured objects, and a few power outages are likely.

Drivers along I-81 and surrounding roadways should exercise caution, particularly high-profile vehicles vulnerable to strong winds. Secure outdoor objects and monitor weather updates for potential changes in conditions.

Looking ahead, Thursday will remain cold, with a high of 31°F and wind chills hovering in the low 20s. By Friday, winds will taper, and temperatures will reach a high near 43°F. Clear, sunny conditions are forecast for the weekend, with highs climbing to 55°F by Sunday.
