Blacksburg, VA – A powerful Arctic cold front will hit Virginia today, bringing plummeting temperatures, strong winds, and potential hazards. Wind gusts of up to 45 mph could cause tree damage and power outages, while frigid air will make temperatures feel dangerously low.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop sharply from the 30s and 40s this morning to the teens by Thursday night. Wind chills could fall below zero in some areas, particularly in higher elevations. A wind advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. today for much of central and southwest Virginia, including communities along the I-81 corridor.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, use caution on roadways, and prepare for potential disruptions. Snow and blowing snow are also forecast for the mountains of eastern West Virginia, making travel hazardous. By Friday morning, temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits with icy wind chills.
Looking ahead, conditions will improve this weekend. Friday’s high is forecast to reach just 29 degrees, but Saturday will see sunny skies and temperatures climbing to the low 40s. By Sunday, a warming trend will bring highs near 55 degrees before rain returns late in the day.
Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible during the coldest periods and check local updates for any weather-related changes.
