Richmond, Va. – A powerful bomb cyclone is unloading relentless, wet heavy snow across Virginia tonight, triggering blizzard warnings and strong warnings for residents to protect their health and avoid all non-emergency travel. Conditions will worsen overnight and remain dangerous through Monday as snow bands intensify and winds strengthen statewide.

According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings extend from eastern Virginia through the Delmarva Peninsula, with widespread winter storm warnings covering inland communities including Roanoke and the Shenandoah Valley. Some areas along the coast could approach 30 inches of snowfall, though impacts will be felt across the entire region as rain changes to heavy snow and visibility drops sharply.

The storm’s greatest hidden danger may come after the snow stops falling. This system is producing dense, moisture-packed snow that weighs significantly more than typical powder. That weight can strain roofs, snap tree limbs and bring down power lines from Richmond to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. It also makes shoveling physically taxing. Health officials urge residents to take frequent breaks, push snow instead of lifting when possible and avoid overexertion, especially those with heart or respiratory conditions. Hospitals often report a spike in cardiac emergencies after major snow events.

Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. Roads will become snow-covered and impassable in spots, and whiteout conditions are likely during peak snowfall Monday. If travel becomes unavoidable, drivers should carry a winter survival kit and remain inside their vehicle if stranded.

Heavy snow and strong winds will peak Monday before gradually easing into Tuesday. Additional advisories may follow as the storm lifts north.
