Virginia Beach, Va. – Thunderstorms sweeping across eastern Virginia Friday morning are bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and a risk of flooding that could last through the weekend. Gusts up to 40 mph and repeated rounds of downpours may create travel hazards and localized power outages across the Hampton Roads region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, radar tracked storms moving east at 40 mph early Friday, stretching from Fort Eustis to Smithfield and into Suffolk. The storms are expected to push through Norfolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and Newport News by midmorning, producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and the potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
Officials warn that saturated ground and poor drainage could increase the chance of roadway flooding through Sunday night. Commuters on Interstates 64 and 264, along with U.S. Route 460 near Suffolk, may see delays from ponding water and reduced visibility. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items that could be blown around by strong gusts.
Heavy rain will continue on and off through Monday, with showers lingering into Tuesday. The region could see several inches of rainfall before conditions improve midweek.
