Virginia Beach, Va. – A stretch of calmer, sunnier weather inland won’t mean smooth sailing for coastal Virginia, where strong onshore winds and rough surf are creating dangerous conditions through midweek. Highs will hold steady in the 70s across the region, but building seas are set to drive a rising rip current risk and minor tidal flooding Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a moderate to high rip current threat is in place today, increasing to a high risk Tuesday and Wednesday along southern Virginia beaches. Northern beaches will see a moderate rip current risk. Seas of 4 to 7 feet are expected, and forecasters warn beachgoers to avoid swimming during peak hazards.

Hampton Roads communities should also prepare for minor tidal flooding around the times of high tide both Tuesday and Wednesday. While skies will be partly cloudy with only a few showers near the coast midweek, inland areas such as Richmond and Petersburg will stay mostly sunny and dry.

Travelers along Route 58 and Interstate 64 near the coast may face breezy conditions and ponding in low-lying areas. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and limit time in the surf.

Conditions improve late Wednesday with drier, sunnier weather expected into next weekend, though coastal alerts could be reissued if seas remain elevated.
