Virginia Beach, VA – Midweek plans across southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina could be interrupted Wednesday as thunderstorms bring the potential for heavy rain and localized flooding. Afternoon storms may also keep a moderate rip current risk in place for area beaches, raising safety concerns for swimmers.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, storms could develop after late morning and continue into the evening. Some cells may drop more than a quarter-inch of rain in a short period, especially in areas from Virginia Beach to Currituck County. The rip current risk will remain moderate through at least Tuesday evening, but unsettled surf conditions could linger into midweek.

Southwest winds up to 7 mph and humid conditions will make Wednesday feel muggy, with highs near 85°F. Travelers should watch for ponding on roads during heavier downpours, and beachgoers are urged to swim near lifeguards or stay out of the water when red flags are posted.

Storm chances taper late Wednesday night, with drier weather expected Friday before more weekend storms return.
