Virginia Beach, VA – Flooded streets and heavy rain snarled the early Friday commute across Virginia Beach and much of southeast Virginia, with flood advisories in effect as of 5 a.m. and more showers moving in through sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, up to three inches of rain have already fallen overnight, swamping low-lying roads from Chesapeake to Suffolk and into northeast North Carolina, including Elizabeth City and Camden. Additional heavy downpours are possible before 8 a.m., increasing the risk of road closures and traffic delays in neighborhoods like Knotts Island, Moyock, and along major routes near Virginia Beach.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded streets—most flood deaths happen in vehicles, and water levels can rise quickly before daylight. Emergency officials recommend turning around at barricades and charging phones in case of power outages.
Some school districts are already reporting delays, and local emergency management is monitoring areas known for poor drainage and past flood events.

This marks one of the most impactful summer flood mornings in Hampton Roads so far in 2025, with a persistent line of thunderstorms expected to taper by late morning. Drier, breezier weather is forecast for Saturday, but authorities warn that additional advisories could be issued if rainfall continues.

The flood advisory remains in effect until at least 8 a.m. Friday. Monitor local alerts for changing road conditions and any new warnings.
