Virginia Beach, VA – Strong surf and a high risk of rip currents are creating dangerous swimming conditions across Virginia Beach and coastal Maryland through Sunday evening, prompting officials to urge beachgoers to stay out of the water.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, waves of 4 to 6 feet are pounding the coastlines of Virginia Beach, Accomack and Northampton counties in Virginia, and Maryland Beaches County. The Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Sunday night, with a Hazardous Weather Outlook also highlighting continued risks from longshore currents.
Lifeguards are advising visitors not to enter the water, especially in unguarded areas. Even experienced swimmers could be pulled out by the strong currents. Winds from the northeast are gusting up to 29 mph today, further churning the surf and contributing to unstable beach conditions.
Sunny skies and breezy conditions dominate the rest of the Sunday forecast, with calmer weather expected to return Monday. No hazardous weather is expected beyond tonight, but beachgoers should continue monitoring local advisories before planning any early-week outings.
