Virginia Beach, Va. – Swimmers along the North Carolina–Virginia coast should stay out of the water Thursday as dangerous rip currents and rough surf build through the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday for Virginia Beach and Eastern Currituck County. Forecasters warn of breaking waves around 3 feet, driven by a favorable wind pattern that increases the risk of life-threatening rip currents.

Local beachgoers are urged to avoid entering the ocean altogether, as even experienced swimmers may struggle in these conditions. The combination of strong longshore currents and choppy surf can quickly pull swimmers away from shore.

Officials recommend staying on dry sand, observing posted flags and warnings, and checking with lifeguards before approaching the water. No lifeguard on duty? Stay out.

This hazard is part of a larger swell pattern affecting much of the Mid-Atlantic coastline, and similar conditions may persist into Friday depending on wind shifts.

⚠️ The Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday. A new advisory may be issued if conditions worsen.
