Virginia drivers and beachgoers face a double challenge today as strong winds and dangerous rip currents sweep the coast. Rough surf and gusts topping 30 mph could create risky conditions for swimmers while slowing traffic along U.S. Route 60 near Virginia Beach.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a moderate rip current risk remains in effect through Monday evening for eastern Currituck County and Virginia Beach. Breezy northeast winds between 18 and 21 mph, with gusts near 30 mph, will keep waves choppy and surf conditions dangerous. Swimmers should avoid entering the water, while drivers along coastal routes should prepare for slower commutes due to blowing sand and limited visibility.
The threat eases by Tuesday, but showers could move in late, bringing slick spots on local roads. Chance of precipitation stands at 20 percent Tuesday night and 30 percent Wednesday, with most showers staying light.
By midweek, conditions improve as skies clear and temperatures rise into the mid-70s. Overnight lows will dip into the upper 60s, offering the first taste of fall air.
Residents are advised to stay cautious near the shoreline today and monitor weather updates as conditions shift midweek. Another update may follow if rip current risks extend beyond tonight.
