Virginia Beach, VA – Coastal Virginia kicks off October with dangerous surf and strong winds, as high surf and rip current alerts remain in effect through early Thursday morning. Anyone heading to Virginia Beach or traveling along Route 60 should avoid entering the water, especially as waves crest between 4 to 11 feet by Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Beach Hazards Statement remains active through this evening, with a High Surf Advisory stretching from 2 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Thursday. The alerts cover Eastern Currituck County in North Carolina and extend north to Virginia Beach, where strong northeast winds will continue funneling large breakers onto the coast.

Local authorities urge beachgoers and boaters to stay out of the surf zone and avoid jetties or piers. “Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water,” the advisory warns, citing strong rip currents and increasing erosion concerns along the shoreline.

Breezy conditions and mostly sunny skies will dominate much of the week, making for pleasant fall weather inland—but those along the coast should expect rough surf through midweek. Winds will stay elevated into Thursday, gusting up to 31 mph before tapering by the weekend.

Another update may be issued if conditions worsen. Beachgoers and residents should monitor alerts and avoid risky water activity until Thursday morning.
