Augusta County, VA – Drivers and residents in Augusta County should expect heavier traffic beginning this weekend as the Norfolk & Western #611 steam engine returns for a month of excursions.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the Buckingham Branch Railroad will operate the trips every weekend from Thursday, September 26, through Saturday, October 26, with two daily departures. The train will run between Goshen and Staunton, typically crossing into Augusta County 30 to 45 minutes after leaving Goshen.

Sheriff Donald L. Smith said extra patrols will be in place along key roads after past years saw complaints of reckless driving by rail enthusiasts. Problem areas include Little Calf Pasture Highway, Parkersburg Turnpike, and Hewitt Road. Authorities are asking drivers to use caution, avoid unsafe stops, and share the roads safely with increased traffic.

The excursion schedule includes:

  • September 26–28
  • October 3–5
  • October 10–12
  • October 17–19
  • October 24–26

Thousands of visitors are expected to travel to Augusta County to view the rare locomotive, which has a devoted following nationwide. The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the #611 is a cultural treasure and encouraged residents to welcome visitors while prioritizing safety on local highways.

The Sheriff’s Office will have deputies stationed along the route each weekend to monitor traffic and keep the excursions safe for both rail fans and local communities.
