Vigo County, IN – The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office has completed an internal review following the release of body cam footage from August 2023 showing a deputy making “inappropriate, insensitive, and unacceptable” remarks, according to Sheriff Derek Fell.
The footage, recorded more than two years ago, was made public approximately three weeks ago. Sheriff Fell said the department immediately launched a review of not only the incident in question but also additional body camera recordings involving Deputy Brown from recent years.
Following that investigation, the agency’s merit board approved several disciplinary measures, including a 20-day unpaid suspension, 12 months of probation, and a 60-day suspension of rank, resulting in temporary loss of pay. The corrective action also requires Deputy Brown to complete extensive training focused on addiction recovery and stigma awareness, including programs on implicit bias and the disease model of addiction.
In addition, Brown must complete six hours of community recovery activities and attend two meetings with recovery community members as part of the department’s restorative approach.
Sheriff Fell acknowledged the incident “reflected negatively on the Sheriff’s Office and all who work here,” emphasizing the importance of words and accountability within law enforcement.
“We’ve been reminded about the magnitude of the words we speak and how harm can result regardless of our intentions,” Fell said.
He added that the department will continue its mission “to serve and protect safely, respectfully, and professionally.”
