Vigo County, IN – Authorities in Vigo County are investigating a fatal altercation that occurred earlier this month in West Terre Haute, which has now been ruled a homicide by the county coroner.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched October 8 to a reported fight on St. Mary’s Road in West Terre Haute. Upon arrival, deputies located 73-year-old Robert Gibson, who was alert and reported that he had been involved in an altercation with two other men — identified as Thomas Sebring, 57, and Larry Norris, 70, all from Vigo County.

Deputies learned the three men were acquaintances and that a verbal dispute escalated into a physical confrontation. Gibson was treated at the scene but initially refused further medical attention. Norris left before deputies arrived but was later found and transported to Regional Hospital, then transferred to an Indianapolis facility for further treatment.

Gibson was later taken to Union Hospital on October 9 for his injuries and died on October 12. A preliminary autopsy released October 14 determined the manner of death to be homicide.

According to Sheriff Derek Fell, Norris remains under medical care and faces charges of aggravated battery, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana. Additional charges are pending review by the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office.
