Vermont greets the morning with light snow drifting across dark, slick pavement.
Headlights reflect off icy patches, and boots crunch on fresh flakes. This Weather pattern matters now as holiday travel increases and winter hazards expand quickly.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, slippery travel is possible early today due to light snow accumulations. Snow continues on and off, with up to one to two inches possible in spots. Winds gust at times, lowering visibility on untreated roads.

Temperatures hover near 30 degrees today, then fall steadily. Christmas Day stays cloudy and blustery, with scattered snow showers and highs near 31. Snow amounts remain light, but cold air locks in.

By Thursday night, lows plunge near 3 degrees, marking the coldest stretch so far this winter. That deep freeze increases the risk of black ice wherever snow melts during daylight hours. Drivers should watch bridges, shaded roads, and parking lots.

Snow chances return Friday into Friday night, with highs only near 14 degrees. Snow showers may linger into Saturday. Roads could remain slick despite light accumulations, especially during peak post-Christmas travel on Saturday, December 27.

Meteorologists are also tracking a higher-impact system late Sunday into Monday. There is a high probability of wintry mixed precipitation during that period. Hazardous travel conditions are possible across northern and central Vermont.

While major snow totals are not expected immediately, repeated snow and bitter cold raise risk levels. Winter is settling in quickly across New England, even as warmer trends appear elsewhere nationwide.
