The Green Mountains are waking to another bitter start this morning, with temperatures near -5°F and a quiet calm before the next round of snow. By midweek, conditions across northern Vermont and the Champlain Valley will turn wintry again as a developing system spreads light to moderate snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread snowfall is expected Wednesday into Wednesday night, with accumulations between 2 and 5 inches possible. The heaviest bands may hit early Wednesday morning, producing short bursts of 1 inch per hour snowfall rates before tapering to lighter flurries.

Travelers along I-89, Route 7, and Route 2 should plan for slippery stretches and limited visibility through Thursday morning. While snowfall amounts will vary by elevation, slick roads are expected across Chittenden, Addison, and Franklin counties. Wind gusts up to 28 mph could also create patchy blowing snow, especially in open fields and higher terrain.

By Thursday afternoon, highs will reach only the upper 20s before dipping into the low teens at night. Friday looks calmer and mostly sunny, but another clipper system may return late in the weekend, hinting at a continued pattern of lake-effect snow across the Great Lakes and northern New England from Dec. 11–17.

Residents are urged to prepare for changing road conditions, keep emergency kits handy, and check in on friends or neighbors who may need warmth.
