Burlington, VT – A significant winter storm is set to impact northern Vermont today, bringing two rounds of hazardous weather to Orleans County. The region is seeing mixed precipitation this morning, with a much stronger storm arriving early this afternoon and lasting through Monday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday for wet snow and a glaze of freezing rain, which could create slick conditions on roads, bridges, and driveways. Up to one additional inch of snow and sleet is possible before the advisory expires.
Beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, a Winter Storm Warning goes into effect until 7 p.m. Monday, with heavy accumulating snow moving into the region. Forecasters expect 10 to 15 inches, especially along northwesterly and westerly slopes where elevation will enhance snowfall totals.
According to the NWS, the combination of heavy snow and strong winds may weigh down tree limbs, potentially causing sporadic power outages across the county. Travel is expected to become very difficult to impossible, with hazardous conditions lasting through both the Monday morning and evening commutes.
Snowfall intensity will increase this afternoon and continue overnight, with rapidly changing road conditions likely in mountainous areas. Visibility may drop sharply during heavier bursts of snowfall.
Residents are urged to prepare for the potential of extended travel delays, reduced visibility, and slippery surfaces. Those who must drive should carry emergency supplies and check New England 511 for updated road conditions throughout the storm.
