Burlington, Vermont – Hot, humid air and fast-moving thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Vermont Tuesday afternoon, just in time to snarl afternoon travel near Burlington and along I-89. Heat index values may reach 90°F before storms arrive, bringing downpours, gusty winds, and lightning by midday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the greatest risk for thunderstorms will occur between noon and 6 p.m. Tuesday, with an 80% chance of rain across Chittenden County. Storms may produce localized flooding and briefly reduce visibility on major roadways, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during the afternoon hours. Keep phones charged in case of power outages, and secure outdoor furniture or grills before storms move in.

Relief comes Wednesday as mostly sunny skies and calmer winds return. Highs near 86°F will make for a classic summer day with low humidity. Thursday brings another chance for evening showers, with skies expected to clear before the holiday weekend.
