Burlington, VT – Vermonters hoping for a quick break from early December’s Arctic chill will have to wait a little longer. According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center’s 8–14 Day Outlook, issued December 1, below-normal temperatures are expected to hold firm across Vermont from December 9 through December 15.

The pattern continues a colder-than-average trend gripping the Northeast and Great Lakes regions, while much of the western U.S. warms significantly. For Vermont, that means daytime highs in the 20s and 30s, and nighttime lows dipping well below freezing, particularly in the Green Mountains and northern valleys.

Precipitation is forecast to run above normal, signaling continued chances for light to moderate snow across central and northern parts of the state. Burlington, Rutland, and Montpelier could see periodic flurries or mixed precipitation through the week as storm systems pass along the East Coast.

Meanwhile, the West Coast, Southwest, and Texas will see a complete contrast — drier, sunnier, and much warmer than average. Vermont, however, remains firmly in the cold zone through mid-month.

Forecasters say a brief moderation in temperatures could arrive closer to the third week of December, though Arctic air may return before Christmas.
