Burlington, Vt. – A damp and unsettled pattern will persist across Vermont through the end of the week as an upper low near the Great Lakes spins waves of rain, occasional thunder, and even some early-season snow over the higher peaks. Temperatures will cool steadily through Friday, bringing a brisk fall feel statewide.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, periods of rain will continue through Thursday with highs in the lower 50s and pockets of small hail or brief thunder possible this afternoon. The most frequent showers will develop along the spine of the Green Mountains, where upslope flow enhances rainfall totals.

By Thursday night into Friday, colder air aloft may drop snow levels to near 4000 feet, dusting summits such as Mount Mansfield and Killington. While no accumulation is expected in valleys, the higher terrain could briefly turn wintry before the system weakens late Friday.

Travelers in the mountain passes should prepare for changing visibility and slick conditions. Outdoor events and fall foliage hikes may need to adjust timing around the wetter windows. The weekend outlook shows gradual clearing and a return to seasonable October sunshine by Saturday afternoon.
