Burlington, VT – Vermont is bracing for its first true taste of winter next week as a surge of Arctic air sweeps across the Northeast, ending the state’s mild start to November. According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, a powerful cold front will move through Monday, November 10, followed by the sharpest temperature drop of the season.

Lows are forecast to fall into the mid-teens across northern and higher-elevation areas and into the low- to mid-20s elsewhere by dawn Tuesday, November 11. The Day 3–7 Hazards Outlook from the Weather Prediction Center places all of Vermont under a “Frost/Freeze” risk, marking the end of the growing season statewide.

Behind the front, brisk northwest winds are expected to gust 25 to 30 mph Monday evening, adding a biting chill to the air. Wind chills could briefly dip into the single digits in the Green Mountains, forecasters said. The cold will persist through Tuesday, with highs struggling to climb out of the 30s under mostly sunny skies.

The sharp cold snap follows several weeks of unseasonably warm conditions. The incoming Arctic air mass will contrast dramatically with the mild November pattern that has dominated much of the East Coast, forecasters noted.

Residents are advised to cover or bring in any remaining outdoor plants, disconnect garden hoses, and take precautions to prevent freezing pipes. Pet owners should also ensure animals have warm shelter as temperatures plunge overnight.

A slow warming trend is expected late in the week, though temperatures are forecast to remain below normal into mid-November.
