Burlington, Vermont – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through late Monday night across much of Vermont and portions of northern New York, with heavy snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, snowfall totals of 7 inches or more are possible across central and northern Vermont and large parts of northern New York. The watch includes areas such as the Champlain Valley, Northeast Kingdom, Green Mountains, and portions of St. Lawrence, Clinton, and Essex counties in New York.

In southeastern St. Lawrence County, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday, with ongoing snow producing additional accumulations of 2 to 4 inches and localized totals up to 9 inches. That area will then transition into the Winter Storm Watch beginning Sunday afternoon.

Forecasters say snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour at times, particularly during the height of the storm Sunday night into Monday. Blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, making travel very difficult on highways, secondary roads, and mountain passes.

Roads are expected to become slippery, with hazardous conditions likely impacting both the Monday morning and evening commutes. While exact snowfall amounts may vary by location, confidence is increasing that a long-duration winter storm will affect much of the region.

Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely as details become clearer. Officials recommend delaying non-essential travel during periods of heavy snow and allowing extra time for necessary trips. Drivers should slow down and check road conditions before traveling.

Communities across Vermont and northern New York should prepare now for prolonged winter weather impacts and difficult travel conditions.
