Montpelier, VT – A flood threat is building across southern Vermont as steady, heavy rain pushes in Thursday night and continues through Saturday evening, with 1–3 inches expected and localized totals exceeding 3 inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Flood Watch is in effect from late Thursday through Saturday morning for Bennington and Windham counties, where soils remain saturated from recent rainfall. Widespread rain totals of 1–2 inches are forecast across the state, with the heaviest precipitation expected along the southern tier.
Communities such as Brattleboro, Bennington, and Springfield may see street flooding and rising streams by Friday afternoon. Rainfall intensity will peak overnight Friday into early Saturday, with areas along Route 9 and Interstate 91 likely to experience reduced visibility and ponding. Localized flash flooding cannot be ruled out, especially in poor-drainage zones.
Officials urge Vermonters to avoid driving through flooded roadways, secure outdoor items, and monitor weather alerts closely. Residents in flood-prone areas should be ready to act quickly if conditions worsen. This storm marks yet another in a string of wet weekends across the region, adding to seasonal rainfall totals.
Rain is expected to taper by Saturday night, but more advisories could follow as another system may arrive early next week.
