Burlington, VT – Much of Vermont is set to wake up to its coldest morning of November on Wednesday as temperatures plummet into the teens and lower 20s across the state. Forecasters say the combination of clearing skies and snow on the ground will allow heat to escape quickly overnight, setting the stage for a sharp drop in temperatures by daybreak.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, widespread temperatures between 13 and 22 degrees are expected early Wednesday morning, with slightly warmer readings — mainly in the mid-20s — along the Lake Champlain shoreline. Areas such as Burlington, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, and South Hero are projected to remain a few degrees warmer than surrounding regions thanks to the moderating effect of the lake.

Forecasters say the coldest readings will likely occur in the Adirondacks and the higher valleys of central and northeastern Vermont, where towns including Saranac Lake, Malone, Montpelier, and Stowe may dip into the low teens. The added snow cover across northern New York and northern Vermont is expected to intensify the overnight cooling.

While Wednesday morning’s cold does not pose widespread hazards, forecasters advise residents to prepare for icy surfaces where snowmelt refroze during the evening. Drivers may also encounter slick spots on untreated roads, especially in shaded or rural areas.

Temperatures are expected to rebound into the upper 30s and lower 40s by the afternoon before another cold night settles in later this week. Additional updates from the weather service are expected as the week’s temperature pattern continues trending below seasonal norms.
