Burlington, Vermont – A late-winter arctic outbreak is expected to bring dangerous cold and subzero wind chills to Vermont from Friday through Monday, increasing the risk of frozen pipes, home heating strain, and cold-related emergencies statewide.

According to the National Weather Service and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a surge of arctic air will overspread the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and parts of the Midwest beginning Friday, Feb. 6. The coldest conditions are expected through Sunday night into Monday, with minimum wind chills across Vermont falling well below zero, especially in the Green Mountains and Northeast Kingdom.

Forecast guidance indicates much-below-normal temperatures persisting into early next week, with moderate confidence in prolonged cold across New England. Gusty winds are expected to exacerbate conditions, creating dangerous wind chills that may cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.

Extended periods of below-freezing temperatures increase the risk of frozen and burst pipes, particularly in older homes common across Vermont. Pipes located in basements, crawl spaces, exterior walls, and unheated garages are considered most vulnerable during multi-day cold outbreaks. In the broader region, Lake Erie is now nearly 100% frozen, highlighting the intensity and duration of the cold air mass affecting the eastern U.S.

State and local officials urge residents to insulate exposed plumbing, seal drafts, and keep indoor temperatures consistent, even when away from home. Letting faucets drip slightly and opening cabinet doors can help prevent freezing. Authorities warn against using open flames or fuel-burning heaters indoors to thaw pipes due to fire and carbon monoxide risks.

Cold weather safety guidance also advises limiting time outdoors, covering exposed skin, and ensuring pets and livestock have adequate protection from the cold. Additional cold weather advisories or warnings may be issued as conditions evolve through the weekend.
