Burlington, Vt. – A low gray ceiling drapes over Lake Champlain early Thursday morning, and the air carries that damp, restless feel before a front moves through. Rain will return today across northern Vermont, followed by brisk winds and the first real taste of late-October chill by Friday.

Showers will increase through midday, some briefly steady during the afternoon, before tapering late in the evening. Roads will stay slick during the commute, especially along I-89 and Route 7 where scattered wet leaves could make for slippery travel. Temperatures will top out near 56°F before sliding into the low 40s as the front passes.

By Friday, the region settles under a cooler, gusty flow with scattered sprinkles early and temperatures holding in the low 50s. Skies will begin to clear by afternoon, setting up a picture-perfect Saturday with sunshine, light winds, and a high near 50°F — ideal weather for leaf-peeping, hikes, or pre-Halloween yard prep.

Saturday night will turn crisp, and some patchy frost is possible in sheltered valleys and higher terrain north of Burlington. Sunday keeps the trend of cool stability, with filtered clouds and highs in the upper 40s. Early next week, long-range models hint at another system developing, possibly bringing rain back to the Green Mountains by Tuesday.

Across the Northeast, this same cold front is ending the growing season for many states — from Iowa to Virginia — as temperatures dip into the 20s and 30s. While Burlington won’t see a hard freeze just yet, the winter transition is unmistakable. The next few mornings will feel sharper, quieter, and every bit like late October in Vermont.
