BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Green Mountains may wake to a wintry look by Monday as a strong system pulls colder air across northern Vermont. Rain, snow, and a possible brief glaze of freezing rain could make travel slick across higher routes from Burlington to St. Albans and the St. Lawrence Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a low-pressure system will slide through late Sunday, bringing a messy mix of snow and rain. Precipitation may begin as wet snow Sunday morning, transition to rain during the day, then switch back to snow or sleet as colder air deepens overnight. A few tenths of an inch of snow could accumulate on grassy surfaces, but mountain passes—especially along I-89 and Route 2—may see the first thin coating of the season.

Hazardous Weather Outlooks remain in effect for northern New York, central Vermont, and the Champlain Valley, where travel could turn hazardous for a few hours late Sunday into early Monday. By Veterans Day, brisk northwest winds will keep highs in the 30s with snow showers still possible, a clear signal that winter’s grip is tightening across the North Country.

Residents should prepare for slippery bridges and ramps, especially at daybreak Monday, and allow extra time for commutes or school travel. Keep windshield washer fluid topped off, and use caution in shaded or elevated areas where ice could form first. To be fair, accumulations look light for now—but after a mild fall stretch, this marks Vermont’s true November turning point.
