BURLINGTON, Vt. – Frost sparkles on rooftops across Chittenden County this morning, a fleeting calm before clouds gather and the next fall system moves in. The air feels crisp, the sky clear and blue for now — but by Thursday afternoon, umbrellas will be back in hand as the late-October weather pattern takes another turn.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, rain will develop Thursday afternoon and intensify into Thursday night. Totals of up to an inch are likely across northern Vermont, with the steadiest rain along the western slopes and Champlain Valley. Winds will strengthen as well, gusting to 25 mph at times. Travel on I-89 and Route 7 could become slick by Thursday evening as temperatures hold in the upper 40s to mid-50s.

Friday brings breezy showers early before drier air sweeps in by afternoon — just in time for Halloween evening. Trick-or-treat conditions look favorable, with partly cloudy skies, a light west wind, and temperatures around 50°F at sunset. Parents should still plan for light jackets and flashlights as the breeze lingers.

Saturday remains unsettled, with a few lingering showers and brisk winds. By Sunday, skies clear and temperatures cool into the 40s — a true late-fall feel as Vermont edges closer to winter’s doorstep.

After all, early signs of November’s chill are already in the air — and remember, clocks fall back Sunday morning as Daylight Saving Time ends. A chilly November lies ahead.
