Montpelier, Vt. – Heavy rain will soak much of Vermont on Saturday, with more than an inch expected in areas like Montpelier and Rutland by early Sunday, creating slick roads and damp conditions across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a low-pressure system is moving through central and eastern New England, bringing steady rain and below-average temperatures. Rainfall totals could exceed 1.3 inches in Montpelier, 1.2 inches in Rutland, and near 1 inch in Burlington and St. Johnsbury by 8 a.m. Sunday. Most of the state will see rain begin Friday night and peak Saturday afternoon, with the highest precipitation concentrated in eastern Vermont.
Localized flooding is not expected, but wet roads could slow travel on I-89, Route 2, and smaller roadways throughout the Green Mountains. Temperatures will remain unusually cool, hovering in the upper 40s to mid-50s on Saturday before dipping into the low 40s overnight.
Residents should plan for indoor activities, check windshield wipers and headlights, and avoid driving through standing water. Rain chances drop off significantly by Sunday afternoon, though lingering showers and chilly air may persist into Monday morning.
Rainfall warnings remain in effect through early Sunday, with additional updates expected if totals rise.
