BURLINGTON, Vt. – Skies over Vermont could light up tonight as the Northern Lights push farther south than usual, offering residents a rare September spectacle. Clear skies are key, and anyone hoping to see the aurora should step away from city lights and look north after dark.
According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, a coronal mass ejection traveling more than 2 million mph could fuel visible aurora displays through Tuesday morning. The best viewing chances stretch from New England to the Pacific Coast, including Vermont. Drivers along I-89 and rural routes should stay alert as onlookers may pull over to catch a glimpse.
Clouds could interfere with the show at times, but Burlington will remain mostly cloudy tonight with lows near 59. Tuesday brings partly sunny skies with a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Afternoon highs will reach near 80, making for a warm start to meteorological fall.
Wednesday offers a break with mostly sunny skies and highs near 80, while Thursday turns hotter with highs in the low 80s before showers return at night. By Friday, cooler air settles in with highs in the low 70s and periods of rain.
Residents planning outdoor activities should prepare for changing conditions and check updates frequently. The aurora threat diminishes after Tuesday morning, but additional advisories may follow if geomagnetic activity continues.
