BURLINGTON, Vt. – A golden fall weekend stretches across northern Vermont Saturday, but a damp Columbus Day could interrupt outdoor plans and leaf-peeping drives along I-89. Temperatures stay comfortably mild today and Sunday before a brief, cooler spell arrives with a round of rain Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, sunshine dominates through Sunday, with highs climbing into the upper 60s and light southerly breezes. The calm stretch should make ideal conditions for pumpkin patch visits, apple picking, and fall park hikes across Chittenden and Addison Counties. Residents are urged to take advantage of the dry window to complete any outdoor projects before rain develops late Sunday night into Monday.

Columbus Day will start mostly cloudy with showers spreading from the south by midday. The NWS expects a 50 percent chance of measurable rainfall, mostly light, but it could still slow travel along I-89 and U.S. 7 during the holiday return rush. Temperatures will fall back into the upper 50s, feeling cooler under the clouds. By Tuesday, skies clear again, ushering in a crisp, bright stretch typical of mid-October in Vermont.

Drivers are advised to check road conditions early Monday and pack a rain jacket for any planned holiday events. The week ahead looks quiet but seasonably cool — a reminder that Vermont’s first frost may not be far away.
