Burlington, Vt. – Isolated severe storms could bring heavy rain, frequent lightning, and localized flash flooding to Vermont and northern New York this afternoon, with the greatest risk between noon and 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a stalled boundary is expected to trigger showers and thunderstorms as it moves eastward across the region. Storms will develop off the Green Mountains around midday before spreading across the Champlain Valley and into northern New York.
The primary concern is localized flash flooding in low-lying areas and urban zones, especially near Montpelier, Barre, Rutland, and the Adirondack foothills. Roads with poor drainage may become hazardous during periods of intense rainfall. Lightning could also pose a risk for outdoor events or recreation.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, charge devices, and avoid outdoor activities this afternoon. If thunder roars, head indoors immediately to avoid lightning threats.
Storm activity should taper off by early evening, but additional showers could linger in some areas. More updates will follow if new warnings are issued.
