BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermonters should prepare for a windy and stormy Sunday as gusts build and thunderstorms threaten travel and outdoor plans. Gusts topping 30 mph could sweep across the Champlain Valley and Adirondacks, raising fire weather concerns in dry areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, humidity values dropping near 35 percent today combined with gusty winds up to 25 mph could spark fire risks across northern New York and Vermont. By late tonight into Sunday, winds will strengthen further, with southerly gusts reaching 35 mph along Route 11 in the Adirondacks and across western Vermont counties.

Storm chances increase Sunday afternoon into Monday, when showers and stronger thunderstorms could bring bursts of heavy rain and locally damaging wind. Travel delays are possible on Route 7, I-89, and I-91 as visibility drops in downpours. Brief power outages could occur where winds push tree limbs into lines.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid burning brush, and be cautious on roadways during strong wind bursts. Sunday night into early Monday, showers and thunderstorms remain likely with localized downpours. Conditions improve by midweek, but unsettled weather lingers into Monday evening before drier skies arrive Tuesday.

The National Weather Service advises Vermonters to check back for updates as advisories may be issued if thunderstorms intensify.
