BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermonters woke up to frosty lawns and chilled windshields this morning, but relief is on the way. A frost advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. Thursday, with temperatures dipping near 32 degrees across Chittenden, Addison, and Franklin counties. Drivers along I-89 and Route 7 faced icy spots in rural stretches before sunrise, but road conditions will improve as the sun warms the pavement.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the frost threat will fade after mid-morning, replaced by a steady warming trend that carries into the weekend. Afternoon highs will climb into the mid-60s Thursday and reach the 70s by Saturday, providing a picture-perfect start to October.
Gardeners are urged to cover tender plants for one more night, but conditions will soon turn ideal for late-season harvests and early Halloween decorating. Outdoor plans across northern Vermont look safe through the weekend, with sunshine dominating and winds staying light.
Friday and Saturday are expected to be especially pleasant, with highs near 75 degrees and clear skies across Burlington, Middlebury, and St. Albans. By Sunday, warmer air pushes highs toward 80, unusual but welcome for the first week of October.
More unsettled weather may return early next week, with a chance of showers by Tuesday. Until then, residents can expect smooth travel, bright skies, and a strong dose of fall color.
Warnings have expired, but NWS will issue updates if cooler air returns by midweek.
