Bennington, VT – Southern Vermont communities should prepare for icy travel conditions Saturday evening as freezing rain moves across Bennington and Western Windham counties from 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday. The late-day system may coat roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces with a light glaze of ice.

According to the National Weather Service, expected ice totals range from a light glaze to around one-tenth of an inch. While amounts remain modest, forecasters warn that even minimal icing can quickly create very slippery roads, sidewalks, and bridges, especially after sunset.

According to meteorologists, temperatures will drop just enough for freezing rain to develop shortly after 7 p.m., with impacts likely through the overnight period. Untreated or shaded areas may become slick first, posing risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

Travelers are advised to slow down, leave extra space, and monitor changing conditions through the evening. Officials also note that isolated power issues are possible if icing accumulates on trees and lines.

Residents heading out Saturday night should use caution on steps, driveways, and parking lots, as the thin glaze of ice may be hard to see until conditions worsen.
