Burlington, VT – Freezing drizzle and heavy rain are creating hazardous conditions across Vermont this week, with a Flood Watch issued for midweek. Forecasters warn drivers to exercise caution on roads, particularly on Interstate 89 and throughout the Saint Lawrence Valley and Green Mountains, where icy conditions have been reported.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, freezing drizzle fell overnight Monday, forming a thin layer of nearly invisible ice on roads. This “sneaky hazard” increases risks of skidding and collisions. Travelers are urged to slow down, avoid cruise control, and leave extra following distance while commuting.

The weather turns more dangerous Wednesday as heavy rain moves into the region, raising flood risks. The Flood Watch, effective from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning, warns of excessive runoff that could lead to flash flooding in streams, rivers, and low-lying areas. Areas of fog are also expected, reducing visibility.

The extended forecast shows rain transitioning to snow by Wednesday night, with snowfall possible in higher elevations. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply Thursday, with highs near 30 degrees, creating icy patches on untreated surfaces.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid flooded areas, and prepare for slower travel midweek. Emergency crews recommend stocking vehicles with winter essentials, including blankets and ice scrapers, in case of delays.

Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday are forecast to be dry but cold, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the low 30s.
