BURLINGTON, VT – A damp start to the weekend is giving Vermont a classic fall transition — gray skies, wet leaves, and the first real hint of cold air building in by Monday. Light rain and drizzle may linger along I-89 and the Champlain Valley through early afternoon Saturday, leaving slick roads and low clouds that cling to the Green Mountains. By Sunday night, drier air moves in, setting up a crisp, calmer start to the new week.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, scattered showers will persist into Sunday morning before tapering off. Highs near 48°F will drop into the mid-30s Sunday night as north winds bring cooler air from Canada. Monday stays mostly cloudy but dry, with highs only reaching the upper 40s. The calm stretch could set up the first patchy frost of the season in sheltered valleys by early Tuesday, a signal that November’s chill isn’t far behind.

Travelers heading toward Montpelier, St. Albans, or across the lake into Plattsburgh should plan for wet pavement Saturday and early Sunday, especially along higher routes. Residents are encouraged to protect late-season plants, bring in outdoor decorations, and check vehicle tires before the colder stretch.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, more sun returns with highs in the low 50s — pleasant for final yard cleanup or early Halloween decorating before temperatures dip again late week.

A chilly November lies ahead, and this weekend’s rain-to-chill shift is the opening act.
