Burlington, Vermont – Residents across northern Vermont and northern New York are waking up to gusty winds and falling temperatures Thursday morning, as a cold front sweeps across the region and ends the recent stretch of mild weather.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, westerly winds could gust between 30 and 40 mph through the morning hours, especially across open terrain and areas near Lake Champlain. The strongest winds are expected during the early morning commute before gradually weakening by evening.
Communities including Burlington, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, Montpelier, and Lake Placid may experience the strongest gusts. Drivers along exposed roadways such as Interstate 89, Interstate 87, and U.S. Route 7 could encounter sudden crosswinds, particularly on bridges and open stretches.
Behind the cold front, temperatures will trend cooler compared to the past several days. Afternoon highs are expected to reach only 30°F to 37°F across Vermont, while northern New York will see highs mainly between 25°F and 30°F.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and use caution if traveling during stronger gusts this morning. Winds will gradually ease later today, but the cooler air mass will remain in place heading into the weekend.
