Burlington, VT – A messy mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is creating slick travel conditions across parts of northern New York and western Vermont early Friday, with up to 2 inches of wintry accumulation and a thin glaze of ice expected before the morning commute ends.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday for western Essex County in New York and much of Addison and Rutland counties in Vermont. The system is producing snow and sleet totals up to 2 inches along with ice accumulation near 0.1 inches, enough to coat untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges.
Communities including Lake Placid and Newcomb in New York, along with Rutland, Killington, Bristol, Middlebury, Vergennes, and Fair Haven in Vermont, may see the most noticeable impacts during the early morning hours. Elevated roadways and shaded rural routes are expected to become especially slick.
Even light ice accumulation can quickly freeze on secondary roads and bridge decks, increasing the risk of spinouts during the Friday commute. Transportation officials urge drivers to reduce speeds and allow extra stopping distance.
Travelers can monitor updated road conditions through 511NY and New England 511 services, where real-time traffic and road treatment updates are available.
The mixed precipitation should taper off by late morning Friday, though isolated icy patches could linger into midday in colder valley locations. Additional advisories could follow if temperatures remain near freezing.
