Burlington, VT – Vermont skywatchers are on alert as the Northern Lights are expected to be visible Monday night into Tuesday morning. A strong geomagnetic storm is set to bring the aurora borealis as far south as Vermont.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the geomagnetic storm index is forecasted to reach a Kp level of 6-7, enhancing the likelihood of aurora visibility. The ideal viewing times are between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Eastern Time, with clear skies being essential for optimal viewing.

The aurora borealis, resulting from solar particles interacting with Earth’s magnetic field, produces vibrant displays of green, pink, and red lights. To maximize visibility, residents should find dark areas away from artificial lights. Checking weather forecasts for cloud cover and using online aurora activity trackers will help in capturing this rare and beautiful sight.
