Burlington, VT – Vermonters are in for a sharp temperature drop this week as a stretch of fall-like weather settles in. According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, light to moderate rain will taper off from west to east this morning, followed by partly sunny skies and much cooler air.

Temperatures will be noticeably lower than recent days, with highs only reaching the 40s and 50s across much of the state. The coldest period is expected Thursday, while frost and freeze conditions could develop tonight but are more likely Wednesday night, the NWS said.

Forecasters urge residents to protect any remaining sensitive plants and take precautions for early-season frost. The agency’s temperature outlook shows lows dipping near or below freezing in spots such as Lake Placid, Montpelier, and Rutland, with highs rebounding slightly by Friday.

Rain showers will end this morning, giving way to dry conditions through the end of the week. The NWS emphasized that much cooler air will dominate northern New York and Vermont, bringing a true taste of fall to the region.
