Rutland, VT – A routine traffic stop on Route 103 near the Shrewsbury–Clarendon line escalated Tuesday morning when a 17-year-old runaway allegedly attacked a Rutland County sheriff’s deputy with a knife, according to authorities.

Deputy Ethan Sweet conducted the stop around 11:22 a.m. on November 4, identifying the vehicle’s driver as 34-year-old Marlisha J. Turner, a transient who was allegedly operating without a license. A juvenile passenger was also in the car and was reportedly known to be a runaway, according to the Rutland County Sheriff’s Department.

When Deputy Sweet attempted to detain the juvenile, officials say the teen allegedly tried to stab him before fleeing into nearby woods. Additional deputies and a K9 unit joined the search, locating the juvenile near the Kingsbury Covered Bridge after a perimeter was set. Both Turner and the juvenile were taken into custody.

Turner was charged with driving without a license and violating conditions of release. The juvenile faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and providing false information to police.

Authorities said no deputies were injured. Turner was held on $500 bail at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility, while the juvenile was held without bail and will be charged as an adult.

Both are scheduled to appear in Rutland County District Court on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 12:30 p.m.
