Burlington, VT – A persistent snowstorm is creating hazardous travel conditions across Vermont, with Interstate 89 and other major roadways affected. Heavy snow is falling at rates of up to 1 inch per hour, leading to reduced visibility and slick, icy surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday. Accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with higher totals in some areas. Drivers are urged to reduce speeds, keep headlights on, and allow extra travel time to reach their destinations safely.
Snow showers are expected to taper off by the afternoon, but icy patches will linger. Gusty winds reaching 40 mph could cause additional travel challenges, especially in exposed areas. Commuters are advised to monitor road conditions and use extra caution on bridges and overpasses.
Looking ahead, light snow showers may return Tuesday night, bringing less than half an inch of accumulation. Christmas Day is expected to be mostly cloudy with highs near 28°F and a light north wind. Temperatures will drop to 11°F overnight.
The week will close with dry but chilly weather. Thursday and Friday will see partly sunny skies and daytime highs in the low to mid-20s. Residents are reminded to dress warmly and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure as wind chills remain in the single digits.
